Chapter Seven

Being out of Morningwood always made my heart pound. I tried telling myself I was a tiger and that if the normies tried anything, I could literally rip them apart, but I'd grown up with my older brother telling normie horror stories. He used to say that they had warehouses full of stainless-steel tables where they strapped shifters down and cut into them while they were still alive and screaming.

I'd since discovered that most of what Malcolm had told me was false, but the damage had already been done.

I had no trouble walking around in my human form in Morningwood, but outside of it, it was like my skin was too tight. I itched all over and no matter how I scratched I couldn't get rid of that feeling that I was wearing a wool wetsuit.

The school bus parked in a large field full of matching buses and we got off. I figured since I was team captain and this was a meet, it was okay if I walked by Wesley's side. Staying under my father's radar meant not being too familiar with my coach when other people were watching. It also meant that late night meetings were out of the question. Every night that I'd stayed at my brother's I'd wanted to sneak over to Wesley's. My brother was gone the whole time, on some mission out in the normie world. I could've had Wesley come over, but Malcolm lived in an apartment building. There were simply too many eyes out and about in a place like that.

Which meant I was horny, worried for Wesley, and on edge being out of Morningwood.

Seemed about right for my fucking life.

At least my father had stopped calling. He was too proud of his image to make a scene in public so I was relatively safe from him as well. As long as we were both careful.

"How are you feeling?" I asked Wesley from the corner of my mouth. Most of the team was behind us and normies couldn't hear for shit.

"Good, a little tired," he replied.

"You're taking the vitamins?"

His good for nothing sister had proven she was good for at least one thing. As a pharmacist, she could get Wesley all the prenatal vitamins that he needed but could disguise them as suppressors. That way, Wesley still looked like everything was the same. After his dinner date with Clay, his parents had calmed down on the whole mating him off soon idea, but he seemed to think this was only a momentary reprieve. One thing was for sure, Wesley wasn't going on a date, fake or not, with any other alpha.

"They won't bite," Wesley said and I knew without looking at him that he was smiling.

I still glared at the normie track and field teams as we walked through them to get to our staging area. An off-season meet like this one was rare, which made it popular with the local colleges and some from further away.

"It's not their teeth I am worried about," I told him.
